Far Cry 2 is an upcoming first person shooter published by Ubisoft and is the sequel to Far Cry. Crytek, developers of the original game, are not involved in the development of Far Cry 2. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions were announced on January 3, 2008, and will ship simultaneously with the PC version 09/02/08.
Technology
Engine
Far Cry 2 will not use CryTek's CryENGINE (from the original game) or CryENGINE2 (which is used in Crysis). Instead, Ubisoft has developed a new engine called Dunia, meaning "world" or "earth" in Arabic, as well as in other languages including Persian, Turkish, Hindi, Urdu, Swahili, Assyrian, and Malay. The engine will take advantage of multi-core processors and support DirectX 9 as well as DirectX 10. Only 2 or 3 percent of the original CryENGINE code is being re-used, according to Michiel Verheijdt, Senior Product Manager for Ubisoft Netherlands.
Fire
Feel the heat of the most realistic fire ever seen in a video game! The fire in Far Cry 2 is one of the main characteristics - in short, you can burn anything you want. Fire plays a big part in overcoming your enemies. Use wind and propagation to surround and trap your enemies. Grabyour Molotovcocktails or flamethrowers to take out your enemies. Discover for yourself how fire brings a new dimension to the usual FPS gameplay.
"To truly understand how good it looks I'd have to herd you all into a field and douse it in petrol, but since I only have words... it spreads exactly as you would expect." - PC Gamer Magazine

Growing Vegetation
The nature regenerates itself in Far Cry 2. That means that limbs, trees and other things are growing the whole time you play.
Weather System
Far Cry 2 offers a elaborate weather system as well as a day-/night cycle. The fire behaves physically correct and depending on where the wind blows the fire will accordingly spread out. The world you roam in will have naturally changing weather patterns that will actually reflect how you are doing in the game - if you are growing ill and your infamy level is high, the skies may remain dark and dreary. Wind will naturally pick up and slow down depending on the climate.

Key Elements
Open World
The extensive artistic research combined with the next-gen engine will allow you to explore over 50Km2 of seamlessly rendered African landscape. No game has ever provided such freedom of movement!
Dunia Engine
The DUNIA Engine was built specifically for Far Cry 2 by the award-winning Ubisoft Montréal development team. It delivers the most realistic destructible environments, amazing special effects such as dynamic fire propagation and storm effects, real-time night-and-day cycle, dynamic music system, non-scripted enemy A.I. and so much more. No more thinking about obstacles, everything is breakable and alterable, even in Multiplayer mode! The DUNIA engine's RealTree technology also delivers the most realistic nature deterioration system ever.
"The engine offers the usual first-person violence, but within an extremely reactive world. Think of the physics in Crysis - collapsable trees and crumbling buildings - but with greater scope.." - PC Gamer Magazine
Real-Time Immersion
Real-time story telling, systemic auto-healing, minimal in-game interface are just few of the features that will make you feel the tension of being alone against barbarous warlords that threaten thousands of innocent lives. There is no HUD, so you have to pull out a map and compass and work out your location for yourself. Healthcare means jabbing the tip of a large bowie knife or pliers into the hole to pull the bullet out. If you accidentally catch yourself on fire, you will have to wipe the flame off your sleeve with your hand.
Weapons of Choice
There will be approximately 30 - 40 different weapon types to perform various forms of destruction. What is unique about the weapons system in Far Cry 2 is that the game will implement weapon degradation as you use them, just as a normal weapon would in reality. If you overuse a gun, it could jam at any moment during the game and possibly at the worst possible time. If you do not take care of your weapon or use one for a prolonged period of time, it could come back to haunt you.
Vehicles
Fly, Drive, Run, slide and hover over the huge open world with your glider, trucks, cars, boats and much more in over 14 vehicles. There will be over 40 different variants of the vehicles which may come with different paintjobs or bulletproofing as well as technical aspects like two or four-wheel drive. So while some vehicle types are the same, different ones will drive differently and have different attributes. Dune buggies can take you pretty well all over the map as you whip through high-grass areas. There is also a hand-glider, which you can use to coast off of tall cliffs and look over the map from a birds-eye view, as well as cover large ground quickly. Ubisoft has done good work of promoting this feature of Far Cry 2, and it will probably be among the most popular aspects of the game as you get a sense of the openness of the map and allow you to view everything from enemies to free-roaming wildlife.
Story
Caught between two rival factions in war-torn Africa, you are sent to take out "The Jackal", a mysterious character who has rekindled the conflict between the warlords, jeopardizing thousands of lives. In order to fulfil your mission you will have to play the factions against each other, identify and exploit their weaknesses, and neutralise their superior numbers and firepower with surprise, subversion, cunning and, of course, brute force. Far Cry 2 immerses players in an entirely new kind of gaming experience, featuring a custom-made video game engine built from the ground up. Players discover a true open world gameplay set in Africa, brought to life by high-definition next-gen technology.
Adding a completely new element to the game, your character early on catches malaria, facing you with a completely new problem. To help rid yourself of the disease and slow its affects on your health, you must explore the map and ask civilian NPCs for medicine while completing missions. As you travel, you will have to take on different tasks in different areas - many of which will involve killing NPCs and blowin' stuff up - which will all effect the environment around you. The game will also give you an infamy rating, which will affect how NPCs react to you, how your team regards you, and how much health you have. Because you'll be getting your medicine from the NPCs in the game, you will have to keep your infamy level down or they will refuse to interact with you. If this problem arises, you may have no other choice than to turn your character into a complete tyrant, killing NPCs to steal their medicine to keep yourself alive.
The story has been written by Susan O'Connor, who has penned the scripts for big-time games like Bioshock and Gears of War. Expect plenty of dialogue from the 55 unique speaking parts in the game.
Gameplay
The gameplay area comprises 50 square kilometers. The freedom to explore this open world is FC2's biggest hook: from the moment you're in control, the game is there to respond to your whims. No linear storyline here: things will happen in accordance with the way you play the game, and how the AI reacts. Instead of using individual maps, the game will take place in a sprawling African backdrop: savannah, forests and shanty towns all rub up against each other, all accessible from the opening moments of the game.
The times and locations and characters of events will be different for every play-through, making you a real influence in the world. It's the sort of thing Boiling Point and Stalker grew up wanting to be. Exploration is rewarded by finding diamonds, and also camps and bedrolls where you can save the game.
Explore a living African world thanks to detailed artistic research brought to life by next-gen technology. Some members of the Ubisoft Montreal team spent 2 weeks in several locations in Africa filming and photographing native wildlife. The team used the animal footage, environment photos as well as capturing natural sound in Africa to create an extremely realistic environment.

Far Cry 2 multiplayer will feature all the modes people love to play and more. Also there will be a inclusion of a map editor. Yes, that includes the console versions, so you can build maps and then share them.
